Digital preservation policy
The Applied Journal of Digital Innovation (AJDI) ensures the long-term preservation, accessibility, and authenticity of all its published content through a combination of local and external preservation strategies.
As part of Reincisol Publishing (Ecuador), the journal is firmly committed to maintaining the integrity of its scholarly record in alignment with international standards for digital archiving.
1. Preservation Objectives
AJDI’s preservation policy aims to:
-
Guarantee permanent access to all published content, regardless of future technological or organizational changes.
-
Protect against data loss, corruption, or obsolescence.
-
Ensure authenticity, integrity, and retrievability of the scholarly record.
-
Support interoperability with indexing and archiving systems.
2. Digital Preservation Mechanisms
AJDI employs several complementary strategies to preserve its digital assets:
a. Portico Archiving
All published volumes and issues of AJDI are archived in Portico, one of the world’s leading digital preservation services.
This guarantees the long-term survival of the journal’s content even in the event of catastrophic data loss or system changes.
Portico provides:
-
Continuous bit-level preservation and integrity verification.
-
Safe storage in geographically redundant data centers.
-
Permanent accessibility for the scholarly community.
b. PKP Private LOCKSS Network (PKP-PLN)
AJDI is also part of the PKP-PLN, a distributed digital archiving network operated by the Public Knowledge Project.
This ensures redundant, decentralized preservation by replicating content across multiple library nodes worldwide.
c. Server Backup and Maintenance
-
Automatic daily backups of all files and databases.
-
Periodic integrity checks and system upgrades of the OJS platform to maintain compatibility and security.
-
Version migration plans to avoid obsolescence of software or file formats.
3. Metadata and Persistent Identifiers
Each article published by AJDI is assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) through Crossref, guaranteeing permanent linking and discoverability.
The metadata conform to Dublin Core and OpenAIRE standards to facilitate interoperability with indexing and preservation systems.
4. File Formats and Accessibility
All articles are made available in PDF and HTML formats to ensure long-term readability and compatibility with standard preservation tools.
These open formats facilitate reproduction, indexing, and citation tracking.
5. Open Metadata and Transparency
AJDI adheres to the Open Abstracts and Open Citations Initiative (I4OC), ensuring that all article metadata—titles, authors, references, and abstracts—are openly available for indexing and preservation.
6. Self-Sufficiency and Independence
The journal maintains self-sufficient infrastructure to minimize dependency on external systems.
All content, metadata, and DOIs are stored locally, allowing rapid recovery or migration if necessary.
7. Long-Term Preservation Commitment
By combining Portico, PKP-PLN, and local redundancy systems, AJDI ensures that its entire digital archive—past, present, and future—remains permanently accessible, citable, and verifiable.
